Our Story

At FatimaCarpets our rugs are handcrafted by Moroccan women artisans who practice rug weaving as a traditional and essential craft. For these women, weaving rugs is more than a skill it is their main source of income and a way to support their families while living in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco.

The idea of creating FatimaCarpets came from a woman named Fatima Ouhmou, who is deeply connected to this craft and to the women who work in it. Fatima did not have formal education, but she had a strong vision and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by women weavers like herself.
In the past, these women sold their rugs to middlemen, who resold them at much higher prices, while the artisans received only a small part of the value of their work. Fatima wanted to change this reality and give these women a fairer opportunity.

To make this possible, the FatimaCarpets company was created and is responsible for managing the business and this website. The company handles the online store, communication, and logistics, allowing the artisans to focus on what they do best: weaving authentic Moroccan rugs.
Today, customers can buy directly from us through this website. This direct connection allows fair payment for the artisans and enables us to communicate directly with our clients, which we believe is a beautiful and honest way of doing business.

Our Traditional Weaving Process

We start by carefully reviewing the rug details provided by the client, including size, design, and preferences. Once everything is confirmed, we begin creating the foundation of the rug using traditional weaving methods. The entire process is done by hand, following ancestral techniques passed down through generations. Each rug is 100% handmade using natural wool sourced from Moroccan sheep, ensuring authenticity, durability, and quality in every piece.

1. Shearing the Sheep The process begins in the Atlas Mountains, where Moroccan sheep are carefully sheared to collect their wool. This is done with care to ensure the animals are not harmed, and only the finest wool is selected for weaving.

2 . Washing the Wool The raw wool is carefully washed to remove dirt, grease, and natural impurities. This step ensures the wool is clean, soft, and ready for the next stage.

3 . Dyeing the Wool After washing, the wool is dyed using traditional methods. We use natural materials such as pomegranate peels, henna, lavender, and other natural flowers to create rich, beautiful, and long-lasting colors .

4. Cleaning and Spinning the Wool Once dyed, the wool is cleaned again and then hand-spun into strong, soft threads. This process prepares the wool for weaving and ensures each thread is durable and consisten .

5. Weaving the Rug Skilled Moroccan women artisans carefully weave the rug by hand on a traditional loom. Each knot and pattern is made with precision, following traditional designs passed down through generations .

6. Final Washing of the Rug After weaving, the rug is washed to soften the wool, set the colors, and bring out the final texture and beauty. This step ensures the rug is ready to be enjoyed for years to come.
